MEET OUR SIX ARTISTS IN RESIDENCE
Nantucket's flagship White Elephant hotel has a history of providing an experience that goes beyond our accommodations and next-level service to include sharing our stunning art collection with our valued guests. That's why, as part of our complete 2023 renovation, including lobby, guest rooms and garden cottages, we're honoring that tradition by commissioning several new pieces through the launch of our Artist in Residence program.
Six artists have been commissioned to create art that is meaningful and authentic to Nantucket and to White Elephant. The artists spent two weeks exploring the island to gather inspiration for their works, venturing to some parts of the island only accessible by boat.
Among the artists include painter Mary Chandler, who created watercolors of the indigenous Nantucket flora for which the cottages are named; installation photographer Thomas Jackson, who shot a series of colorful beachside photographs, the Maine-based landscape painter Greta van Campen, known for her contemporary hard-edged landscape scenes; Swedish artist Clara Hallencreutz and painter Renée Levin, who is best known for her depictions of coastal and natural objects. The centerpiece of the collection is a large-scale commissioned artwork by Israeli painter Orit Fuchs, depicting a harborside scene of a woman in a rowboat, floating by the White Elephant.
Stay tuned for information highlighting our artists, their stories and their work in the coming months.
